Our design calls for a relay but the specification doesn't define a type. What are the key differences between relay types, and how does that affect sourcing?

Relay type selection has real application consequences. Electromechanical relays use physical contacts that provide true galvanic isolation between the control circuit and the load, handle high inrush currents, and fail open when the coil is de-energized. They accumulate mechanical wear over switching cycles and are not suited to high-frequency switching. Solid-state relays use semiconductor switching with no moving parts, support high switching frequencies, and have no mechanical wear, but generate heat in operation and don't provide true galvanic isolation in all configurations. Reed relays serve low-level signal switching where low contact resistance and high sensitivity matter. Time delay relays add a defined interval to switch-on or switch-off, used in sequencing and motor control. ASC stocks all of these relay types from manufacturers, such as Omron, TE Connectivity, and Panasonic. If your specification is incomplete, providing the load type, current range, switching frequency, and isolation requirements with your RFQ will let ASC's team identify the appropriate relay type and part number.

The relay part number we need for a board repair is no longer available. What specifications does ASC need to source a valid substitute?

Coil voltage is the most critical parameter. A relay with the wrong coil voltage either won't energize reliably at the control circuit's supply voltage or will overheat the coil under continuous operation. Contact rating must also match the load: AC and DC ratings differ because DC arcing is harder to extinguish, and a resistive load rating doesn't apply to inductive loads like motors or solenoids, which generate higher inrush current at switch-on. Mounting format and contact arrangement both need to match the existing design, whether that's a PCB mount, DIN rail, or socket-style installation. ASC's sourcing team can work from your original part number to identify the full specification set and source a compliant substitute from current production. If the original part number is unavailable, providing the coil voltage and contact rating with your RFQ gives the team enough to begin.

We source relays for vehicle electrical systems and EV applications that require automotive-grade components. What can ASC supply?

Automotive relays are built to specifications that commercial equivalents don't meet, including wider operating temperature ranges, vibration and shock resistance, and in some formats compliance with ISO automotive relay standards for vehicle fuse and relay box applications. Safety relays are a purpose-built category with design features such as dual-channel monitoring, forced-guided contacts, and contact-state self-monitoring, which enable their incorporation into circuits that must detect and respond to relay failure. The safety performance level an application requires (defined by standards such as IEC 62061 and EN ISO 13849) determines which safety relay series is appropriate. That determination belongs to your safety engineering process. Communicating the required relay series or certification on your RFQ allows ASC's sourcing team to confirm that the part being sourced carries the necessary manufacturer certifications.
