Frequently Asked Questions About Integrated Circuits

A microcontroller we've designed around is at end-of-life. What's involved in finding a compatible replacement, and how does IC crossing differ from crossing a passive component?

Crossing a microcontroller is far more involved than crossing a capacitor or resistor. The electrical parameters are only part of the picture. Peripheral compatibility (including whether the replacement MCU offers the same UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, and timer configurations in matching pin assignments) determines whether firmware can be migrated without a rewrite. Package and footprint must match if you're avoiding a PCB respin. Flash size, RAM capacity, operating frequency, and core architecture all affect whether existing code will run on the replacement with acceptable modification effort. ASC's sourcing team can pull the original datasheet and cross-reference against those parameters to identify candidates from Texas Instruments, Microchip, Analog Devices, Renesas, STMicroelectronics, NXP, or other manufacturers in current production. Submit the original part number and any constraints on firmware portability with your RFQ, and the team can narrow the list to options most likely to minimize re-qualification effort.

Our approved vendor list requires at least two qualified sources for every logic IC on our BOM. Can ASC help identify and source pin-compatible alternatives?

Yes. Many standard logic devices, including 74-series gates, flip-flops, buffers, and bus transceivers, are manufactured by multiple vendors in functionally equivalent versions. A Texas Instruments part and a Nexperia or onsemi equivalent in the same package and logic family are typically pin-for-pin compatible, though confirming propagation delay and output drive specifications against your timing requirements is important before approving an alternate source. ASC can source both your primary approved part and alternative manufacturer versions and can provide manufacturer datasheets to support your engineering review alongside the order. If your AVL qualification process requires documentation from a specific supply chain tier, ASC can confirm the sourcing channel and provide traceability documentation with each shipment.

We need to source Flash memory and DRAM for an industrial application with specific endurance and temperature requirements. How does ASC match specifications for memory devices?

Memory devices have several parameters beyond density and interface that determine whether a part is suitable. For Flash, endurance rating in program/erase cycles and data retention spec are critical for embedded applications where the memory is written frequently. For DRAM, timing parameters, operating voltage, and ECC support determine system stability. ASC sources Flash, DRAM, EEPROM, SRAM, and FRAM devices across a range of temperature grades, and can cross-reference by density, interface protocol, package, endurance, and voltage against your design requirements. Submit your target specifications with your RFQ, and the team can identify available options from manufacturers, including Micron, Alliance Memory, Winbond, and ISSI.

We buy ICs in significant volume from multiple sources and need to verify authenticity beyond visual inspection and XRF. What deeper testing does ASC offer or facilitate?

For orders where the counterfeit risk profile warrants it, ASC's quality testing process includes decapsulation and die analysis. This involves chemically removing the IC package and examining the die directly to confirm that the markings, die revision, and internal construction match the authentic manufacturer's documented design. It's one of the most reliable methods for detecting recycled ICs, black-topped remarked parts, and parts where the die doesn't match the housing label. ASC works with third-party labs holding IDEA-ICE-3000 and MIL-STD-883 certifications that include die-level evaluation capabilities. If your incoming inspection program requires decapsulation testing for a specific part family, lot, or supplier, include that requirement with your RFQ and ASC's team can arrange testing through its lab network.

Our design requires ICs rated for extended industrial temperature operation. What risks are associated with sourcing the wrong temperature grade, and how does ASC prevent that?

Commercial-grade ICs are far more widely stocked than industrial or extended temperature versions, and the price differential creates an incentive in the gray market to supply commercial-grade parts in industrial-grade packaging with the temperature rating marked upward. A part that visually passes incoming inspection may still fail in a system running at the temperature extremes its label claims to support. ASC's sourcing process applies XRF and visual inspection to all open-market orders, and electrical testing at temperature is available through ASC's third-party lab network when the application requires it. When sourcing a specific temperature grade, ASC's team confirms the grade as part of the process and documents it in the accompanying certificates of conformance. Note your temperature requirements in your RFQ so the sourcing team can confirm grade availability before the order is placed.

We maintain legacy products that use ICs no longer manufactured anywhere. How does ASC approach sourcing for truly orphaned part numbers?

Legacy product support is one of the more demanding sourcing challenges because options narrow over time. For recently discontinued parts, ASC's global sourcing network can identify remaining new-in-box stock held in distributor warehouses, manufacturing excess inventory, and authorized end-of-life pools before those channels are depleted. For parts that have been out of production longer, the search moves to bonded stock at independent distributors and excess inventory markets, which requires careful authentication because parts from these channels have had more time to circulate through secondary markets. ASC's inspection process under AS 6081:2012 applies to all open-market sourcing regardless of part age. If a part is genuinely unobtainable, ASC can support a cross-referencing exercise to identify a functional equivalent, though for highly integrated ICs, this may require engineering evaluation beyond a simple part swap. Submit your legacy part number and your current inventory runway with your RFQ
