The most reliable starting point is the full manufacturer part number, because shell size, insert arrangement, contact type (pin or socket), and body style (straight, right-angle, jam-nut) are all encoded there, and sourcing the wrong combination means the connector won't mate or won't fit the panel cutout. Environmental ratings for connectors are specified by several parameters: IP rating for dust and moisture ingress, operating temperature range, vibration resistance class, and connector sealing method. These are documented in manufacturer datasheets and are not always obvious from a part number alone. Automotive-grade and industrial-grade connector families from TE Connectivity, Amphenol, and Molex carry defined environmental specifications, but the variant matters. When you submit an RFQ, including your environmental requirements alongside the mechanical and electrical specs allows ASC's sourcing team to confirm that the part being sourced is rated for your operating conditions.

Connector counterfeiting has different failure modes from what you see with ICs. The most common issue is substandard contact plating, where a thinner or lower-purity gold or tin deposit passes visual inspection but fails after a limited number of insertion cycles or degrades in humidity. Incorrect plastic formulations are another risk: a housing that doesn't meet the original flammability rating may pass dimensional checks but create a hazard in service. Cable assemblies can contain substandard wire gauge, insulation material, or crimp terminations that reduce current-carrying capacity below its rated value. Connector second-sourcing requires more than confirming that two part numbers share the same pitch and pin count. Mating force and withdrawal force specifications determine whether a connector will lock correctly in automated assembly and stay seated under vibration. Contact geometry affects the normal force between mating surfaces, which drives contact resistance and long-term reliability. Housing dimensions need to be verified against the panel cutout or PCB footprint, not just the nominal description, because tolerances vary across manufacturers. If the original connector uses proprietary locking features, a cross-manufacturer substitute may not mate reliably.
