GlobalWafers Reports Emerging Imbalance in Semiconductor Wafer Supply
GlobalWafers says a semiconductor wafer supply-demand imbalance has emerged, with 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch production lines operating near full capacity. Advanced 12-inch wafer shortages are already appearing as demand rises for AI semiconductors, HBM, silicon photonics, and advanced packaging. Memory and logic-chip manufacturers are increasingly seeking to secure long-term capacity agreements, extending contracts from three years to five-to-eight years, while GlobalWafers signed a 10-year agreement with Micron, one of the longest agreements in the wafer industry.
Nvidia Partners With Wall Street To Finance Massive AI Expansion
Nvidia is partnering with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR to establish financing platforms targeting more than $500 billion for AI infrastructure. Nvidia could backstop up to $125 billion. The initiative aims to expand access to Nvidia-based computing while attracting institutional capital for large-scale data-center development.
Apple and Samsung Reshape Premium Smartphone Hardware Strategies
Apple reportedly plans a glass-heavy 2027 iPhone Pro redesign, despite manufacturing challenges involving curved displays and glass assembly. Meanwhile, Samsung is adding 1 million Fold 8 units after record preorders. Rising memory costs are also pressuring margins, with memory potentially exceeding 40% of iPhone Pro BOM costs.
Intel Raises $20 Billion To Fund Foundry Expansion
Intel raised $20 billion through an upsized share offering, exceeding its original $15 billion target, as its stock rally improves financing options. Shares were priced at $95 each. The proceeds will support Intel’s costly contract-manufacturing expansion, advanced packaging, and new fabrication facilities. Intel also increased 2026 capital spending to $20 billion, driven by stronger AI-related CPU demand. The company plans high-volume production using its 14A process in 2028 and recently secured Tesla as a 14A customer. Intel is also upgrading its Ireland manufacturing operations through a €5 billion investment, reinforcing its broader foundry strategy and competitive positioning against TSMC.
SK hynix Gains Strategic Influence Over Kioxia’s Ownership
SK hynix has indirectly become Kioxia’s largest shareholder after Toshiba reduced its stake. Bain Capital’s vehicle now holds 14.19%, slightly exceeding Toshiba’s 14.06%. SK hynix retains convertible bonds tied to the investment, potentially expanding voting influence, although ownership restrictions and regulatory reviews could limit direct management involvement.
TSMC and Sony Target Major Image Sensor Production Expansion
TSMC and Sony reportedly plan a $6.28 billion joint venture in Kumamoto, Japan, targeting next-generation image sensor production by 2029. Sony would hold 60% and TSMC 40%. The partnership aims to strengthen smartphone sensor supply while expanding applications in automotive, robotics, and physical AI technologies.
